Mobile Only? Why?

I've just finished installing the workstation tools from the SQL Server 2005
DVD (No database engine).
I've also installed Visual Studio 2005, with just the VB option and the
other standard stuff.
When I start the Management Studio, connect to a server (doesn't matter what
version), then open a new query, the query is disconnected and the only
connection option is for SQL Server Mobile.
Anyone have any ideas?
I've installed (and repaired) the native client. I can browse servers and
see objects, etc., just no queries. I've installed/uninstalled three times.
Thanks all.
Am I correct that you are talking about the New Query dialog box in
Management Studio? On the File menu, point to New, do you see Database
Engine Query as one of the choices?

|||I've shopped your e-mail around Microsoft a bit, and we can't think of any
reasonable way you could get into that condition. The obvious but cop-out
answer is that either Management Studio or the underlying Visual Studio is
somehow damaged. It's less likely to be related to the SQL Native Client.
Some more questions:
Are you using the RTM version of SQL Server Management Studio?
How consistent is this problem? That is, there are several ways to open the
Connect to Server dialog box in Management Studio:
- On the File menu, point to New, and then click Database Engine Query
- On the Standard toolbar, click New Query
- On the Standard toolbar, click Database Engine Query
- On the Object Explorer toolbar, click Connect, and then click Database
Engine
Do you only get SQL Server Mobile with any of those ways?
What about registering servers? On the View menu click Register Servers. In
the Registered Servers window toolbar, click Database Engine. Now can you
register a Database Engine by right-clicking Database Engine, point to New,
and then click Server Registration? Now is the Server type listed as
"Database Engine"?
Can you connect to the Database Engine from the Server Explorer of Visual
Studio?
(I'm interested in assisting you but I will not be available again until
Monday. Sorry. Holiday plans.)

I'm out of ideas, also. I have successfully installed it on a second
workstation and laptop, both more or less identically configured.
It's probably about time I rebuilt this one anyway, it's been five years...

Missing Triggers on SQL 2005/Server Management Studio

I have a few SQL 2005 databases set up, some of which have triggers.

Recently, the database triggers stopped appearing in SMS. They are still there. They still run. I can still manually CREATE, ALTER, or DROP triggers via SQL queries. However, when I open a database and navigate to Programmability > Database Triggers nothing shows up. Right clicking the folder produces no worthwhile options (just Reports and Refresh).

Until this puzzling change occured a few days ago, triggers were appearing in the aforementioned location. Right clicking yielded many options including the options to create, drop or whatever else. I thought this might be a permissions issue, but as I said, I can still work on triggers via queries.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Thanks, Jeff

I don't think you found triggers under programmability. You found stored procedures there.

The triggers are the expansions of the tables not the database.

Drop down the table and you'll see the triggers.

Adamus

|||

i hope the trigger you mentioned is DDL trigger. you can make DDL triggers are of two scope. one database level and the other one at the server level. The database trigger can found in Database Programability -- Database triggers.

the server level trigger can be seen in Server Object -- Server Triggers

System objects for DDL Triggers

You can use the sys.triggers catalog view to see database-level DDL triggers. The parent_class column in this catalog view has 0 as the value for DDL triggers. You can use the sys.server_triggers catalog view to get a list of server-level DDL triggers. The sys.trigger_events and sys.server_trigger_events catalog views contain a row for each time a database-level and server-level trigger was fired, respectively.

also read these

Query System Object for DDL

SELECT Name, s.type_desc SQL_or_CLR,is_disabled, e.type_desc FiringEvents
FROM sys.server_triggers s
INNER JOIN sys.server_trigger_events e ON s.object_id = e.object_id

Where can I find DDL trigger in SSMO

Databaselevel DDL triggers are listed in the Programmability\Database Triggers folder in Object Explorer. The server-level triggers are listed under the Server Objects\Triggers folder in Object Explorer.

Delete DDL Trigger

The ON DATABASE or ON ALL SERVER clause should be used with DROP TRIGGER to delete a DDL trigger, ALTER TRIGGER to modify a DDL trigger definition, DISABLE TRIGGER to disable a DDL trigger, and ENABLE TRIGGER to enable a DDL trigger.

Permission
The CONTROL SERVER permission is required to create a DDL trigger at the server scope, and ALTER ANY TRIGGER permission is required to create a DDL trigger at the database scope

Madhu

|||Thank you both of you! Both posts were helpful, but Adamus more directly answered my question. I could swear that the triggers I had created were found in Programmability but now I see some of them in the table expansion themselves.

missing system databases folder from management studio

Hi All
My view of database on management studio does not have folder with system
databases. I am sysadmin on server and member of local admins group. Do you
know what could be a problem? In Management Studio take a look at Tools, Options, Hide system objects in
Object Explorer. Is the box checked?
Hope this helps,

There is an option available that turns system objects visible or invisible.
Look at the Options in the Tools menu. The General tab has the checkbox
"Hide system objects in Object Explorer"

Thank you so much. I am happy again now.

Missing Sql Server node

I have just installed Visual Studio 2005 team system beta 2 on an XP machine which had a sql server 2000 previously installed. However I do not see the Sql Servers node in Solution explorer. I do have the data connections node and can make conenctions to the server. Does anyone know what I can do to make the Sql Servers node available?

Hi Asim Shah,

You should register again almost one SQL Server there.

Good Coding!

Missing SQL Server Management Studio

Hi,

I am a novice at SQl Server, so apologise in advance if you think this is a really stupid question.

I have a windows XP laptop with Visual Studio 2005. I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition but do not see the SQl Server Management Studio anywhere. The only thing in Programs/ SQL Server 2005 is SQL Server Configuration Manager. I then uninstalled it & installed SQL Server Express but encountered the same issue.

I would like to install the Developer Edition if possible. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling a few times but it does not work.

Could someone please help in resolving this. Appreciate it!

SQL Server 2005 Express does not include SQL Server Management Studio.

When you install SQL Server 2005 Developer, have you selected workstation components? If you do not include it, SQL Server 2005 Management Studio cannot be installed automatically. Would you try again?

|||

Thanks for a quick response.

I kept all the defaults. I will uninstall & install it again and reply back

Thanks again!

|||If you are still missing the management tools after your new attempt, when you post again, can you be sure to include the contents of the latest *_Core(Local).log file from %programfiles%\microsoft sql server\90\setup bootstrap\log\files? That could have the information pertinent as to why the feature is not getting installed.|||Thanks,Jiongxiong Chen ...
I ran the install again and it worked!!
Thanks a ton!

Missing Properties?

Has anyone tried to open a cube into Business Intelligence Studio and the properties for the database vanished (project menu, properties)?

How do you get them back?

Smilestill haven't figured this one out|||

What property are you looking for?

In project mode there is only the database name property, but if you are working in online mode even this does not appear to be available. But the description, account settings and translations properties are all available under the "edit database" option in both modes.
